Indications for dermatography or keratography

General practitioners and medical specialists may refer patiënts for dermatography or keratography treatment to one of the treatment centers in the Netherlands or abroad.

As a common indication, disturbing differences in colour and structure in comparison to the normal skin are present. Dermatography or keratography may also be indicated when other treatment modalities are ineffective.

In patiënts afflicted with cancer in the face, neck or breast area, a reconstruction with skin transplants is often performed after the surgical intervention. After this treatment the skin colour of the transplant may differ considerably from the surrounding skin. After radio therapy, disturbing red discolourations (teleangiectasies) with a likeness to portwine stains may appear.

After a breast reconstruction, a true-to-life reconstruction of nipple and areola may be added. Post-operative scars may be masked.

Other applications of dermatography include the permanent colouration of burns, portwine stains, rosacea, couperose, vitiligo, depigmentation, hyperpigmentation, facial discolourations after laser-treatment, scars after schisis, after craniosurgery, application of pseudo-hair reconstruction after hair loss (alopecia).

Scars after surgical interventions or accidents may be rendered almost completely invisible. Hypertrophic scars become more supple and flatter after dermatography with kenacort (intracicatricial keloidectomy).

Treatment of therapy-resistent warts using dermatography to apply well-measured doses of cytostatics (bleomycin and others) and cygnolin has been successful, as were other applications of dermatography for the fine dosage of medicines. The sub-specialism of dermatography / keratography is still developing. New applications for these techniques are found each year.
